Letter from Lois

Dear Kathryn,

The enclosed is a bare record of our ancestry. It represents a lot of study and work, delving into past records, old letters, etc., and tells so little. However, if I could, I would like to write you a few of the sketches of the old boys who were more or less responsible for you and I being here. You should go to New England and delve into their town records. The Wrights, Chamberlins, and Hoyts helped to settle most of New England towns. I want to go to Pennsylvania and look up the Hopkins - have a feeling that they would be exceptionally interesting. Am sure there has been a Goodykoontz History written by Hon. Wells Goodykoontz, congressional representative for years from West Virginia.

Don't get the idea that I am an ancestor worshipper as I am far from it. Am more interested in being a good ancestor myself.

However, there are certain things that seem to stick out in the records.

There is never any mention of great worldly possessions but of great spiritual wealth. You kno it takes real aristocrats to be of importance without wealth. They seemed to value a good name above everything else. They had unlimited courage, either killed the Indians, were killed by them, or married them. They also stood for what they thought was right regardless of consequences. Soom were on teh side of England and some revolutionists, in fact, we are a hodge podge like all real Americans - our ancestors came from the waters and were met by our ancestors. I am a firm believer in our children and grandchildren knowing about some of these old boys and girls. If I live long enough will write a few sketches of their lives but right now I am not up to it.

I have been having a little trouble with my heart - so short of breath and blood pressure up, etc. Just got thru my tests and I am told to reduce at once. Hope I can stick to my diet.

I think of you so often and the wonderful time I had in your home. Received a few pictures of Clay, Jr. He looks adorable. Just wish our children could know eachother. Everyon's life seems so full. I believe Clay is really growing up. He has started to plan his life work and can hardly wait until he gets out. Remember me to your children and family and most especially to Billy. Wish I could join you two at the lake. I bought a spinning reel the other day - think I'll go fishing.

My love to you. Hope this enclosed is something you wanted. All my love to you.

Lois
