Funeral Services on Monday for Native Son Lawyer, Businessman
Walter Grey Dunnington, 79, outstanding lawyer and business man, died in New York Thursday night, May 20, following several months of ill health. Funeral services were held in St. Bartholomew Episcopal Church on Monday.
Mr. Dunnington, son of Walter Grey Dunnington and India Knight Dunnington, was born December 15, 1891 in Farmville. He was a graduate of Hampden-Sydney College in the class of 1911, and received his law degree, L.L.B. at University of Virginia in 1914. He served with distinction in the U.S.A. field artillery during World War I and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross.
He was admitted to the New York Bar in 1916, and at the time of his death was senior partner in the well known firm of Dunnington, Bartholow, and Miller. He was a director in several national corporations and philanthropic foundations and a patron of the arts and sciences. Hampden-Sydney College honored him in 1961 with the degree of doctor of laws.
He was a member of several professional and social clubs in New York, and a former vertryman of St. Bartholomew Episcopal Church of New York.
Mr. Dunnington established the permanent endowment fund at Southside COmmunity Hospital, in memory of his mother, Mrs. India Knight Dunnington and later in memory of his sister, Mrs. Sallie Dunnington Clapham.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Alice Bennett Dunnington, a son, Walter Grey Dunnington, Jr. both of New York City, a daughter, Mrs. Allen Dunnington Rosse, of Georgetown, D. C., a brother Dr. John H. Dunnington, of New York, a brother, J. William Dunnington, and a sister, Mrs. Lucie D. Shields, of Farmville.
