Walter C. Sprye
Walter Clement Sprye of Rocky Mount passed away Tuesday, August 11, 1998. He was born in Kannapolis on Sept. 18, 1916, son of the late Walter L. and Flossie C. Sprye. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Pineview Cemetery, Section 54 in Rocky Mount with the Rev. Charles I. Penick officiating.
He graduated from high school in High Point and entered Duke University where he played football his freshman year. Following a bout with pneumonia, he enrolled at Hampden-Sydney College and graduated in 1943. Following graduation, he entered the U.S. Navy and was subsequently stationed at OCS Training School at Hampden-Sydney where he coached football as an assistant and baseball head coach.
He entered the tobacco trade with Dunnington Tobacco Co. in Farmville, VA, and in 1956 joined Overseas Commodex Corp. in Rocky Mount, a subsidiary of J.L. Tiedemanns Tobaksfabrik of Oslo, Norway.
Mr. Sprye was an all-star selection in three sports - football, basketball, and baseball and was inducted into Hampden-Sydney's Hall of Fame in 1990. He also was an avid golfer.
Surviving: Daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Richard Goebel of Charlotte; son and daughter-in-law Skip and Faye Sprye of Rocky Mount; three grandchildren, Katrina Hagler and Peter Goebel of Charlotte and Trey Sprye of Rocky Mount; sisters, Faye Hedgepeth and Martha Cavedo of Richmond, Johnsie Donovan of Long Island, NY: godchild, Walter W. Welch of Salisbury. He was preceded in death by his wife, India Dunnington Sprye and his sister Majorie Park.
He was a former Rotarian, Kiwanian, Mason and a member of Benvenue Country Club.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 PM today at Johnson Funeral Home, Sunset Avenue, Rocky Mount, and other times at 101 Stoneybrook Road, Rocky Mount.
