Dr. Dunnington, 83, Native of Farmville, Dies in New York

Dr. John Hughes Dunnington, 83, died in a New York Hospital early Monday morning, October 17, following a severe stroke on Saturday. A memorial service will be held in St. James Episcopal Church, New York City, Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock.

Dr. Dunnington was the son of Walter Grey Dunnington and India Wycliffe Knight Dunnington, born Jan. 12, 1894, at the Dunnington home "Poplar Hill", near Farmville. He was the youngest of three distinguished brothers, tutored at "Poplar Hill" and graduated by Peonian High School near Washington, DC. He entered Hampden-Sydney, earning a BA degree in the class of 1911, following which he received his MD degree at the University of Virginia in 1916 where he was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa honorary scholarship fraternity. He volunteered immediately for World War I and served in the medical corps as an eye specialist. with the rank of First Lieutenant from 1917 to 1919.

Dr. Dunnington became an outstanding practicing physician, and surgeon with an international reputation and clientele. He also was a member of the faculty of Columbia University as professor in ophthalmology from 1930 to 1959, and served as a consultant in a number of New York hospitals and colleges.

He was a member of the American Medical Association, New York Academy of Medicine, State Medical Society, and other professional societies.

He was a member of the University Club, the Country Club and New Canaan, the New York Southern Society and the Virginians, and Hampden-Sydney Alumni of New York. In 1952 Hampden-Sydney awarded him the honorary degree of LL.D.

On November 26, 1919, he married Genevieve Richards Parker, of New York, who with one daughter, Mrs. Jean D. Cullen, both of New York, survives.
